Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 Departure for Lisbon

The adventure begins as you head for picturesque Lisbon. This is a land-only package: if you'd like us to handle your airfare too, ask us for the price with flights included. We recommend getting to the airport at least 4 hours before your flight so the trip starts stress-free.

Day 2 Lisbon

Welcome to Lisbon! When you arrive in Portugal's charming capital, a representative meets you and takes you to the hotel. The rest of the day is perfect for a first look around: wander the Alfama district, take in the views from its lookouts and try the traditional pastel de nata.

Day 3 Lisbon

In the morning, a full panoramic tour of Lisbon, the city of seven hills, with its history-filled lanes, colorful azulejo tiles, saudade and Atlantic light, plus a stop in Belém, where Portugal's great 15th-century navigators set sail. The afternoon is free to head up to the lively Bairro Alto and its viewpoint or, if you like, take the optional excursion to Sintra, Cascais and Estoril. In the evening we bring you back to the hotel from Restauradores Square, buzzing with bars and cafés.

Day 4 Lisbon – Cáceres – Madrid

We leave early across the Alentejo, with a coffee stop in Estremoz, a town with a medieval castle and cobbled streets that feels like Portugal at its most authentic. Once in Spain, you'll have time in Cáceres for lunch and a stroll through its historic center, one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance ensembles in the world. We reach Madrid at the end of the day and take you to the lively Plaza Mayor, lined with restaurants.

Day 5 Madrid

In the morning we discover Madrid on a panoramic tour of its landmark monuments, grand avenues, fountains and historic squares. The afternoon is free to enjoy at your own pace. If you like, your guide can arrange a visit to magical Toledo or an evening flamenco show.

Day 6 Madrid – Zaragoza – Barcelona

We cross the Castilian landscapes toward Aragón and make a short stop in Zaragoza to admire the imposing Basilica of El Pilar. Then on to Barcelona, where a panoramic coach tour gives you a first taste of Gaudí's city, its Modernist architecture, its Ramblas and the legacy of its World's Fairs and Olympic Games.

Day 7 Heading home

At the scheduled time, transfer to Barcelona airport for your flight home. We return with three unforgettable cities in our memories.

Good to know

  • You'll need a passport valid for at least 6 to 9 months after your return date, with at least two blank pages; send us a copy when you book.
  • You'll stay at the planned hotels or others of the same category. Hotel ratings in Spain and Portugal don't follow US standards: rooms tend to be smaller, and many hotels are in historic or older buildings in outlying areas.
  • A triple room is usually a double with an extra bed (rollaway or sofa bed), so we don't recommend it for three adults, and it's subject to availability.
  • Prices for children aged 0 to 15: ask us.
  • The order of visits, and even some cities, may change to keep the tour running smoothly.
